Racial Justice

The Racial Justice Officer, Alec Mitchell, assists the Church in fulfilling its ministry and mission in the multi-ethnic and multi-confessional context of the Diocese of Manchester.

This is done through the provision of information, education and training, in order to encourage the churches to promote racial justice both within and between themselves, and in their contexts of local community and wider society.

Awareness training

Awareness training for all clergy and Readers is coordinated by Alec. He is developing strategies and actions to combat institutional racism within the Church of England, and in Manchester Diocese in particular.

Within the Interfaith Task Group, he is developing responses to, and initiatives arising from, Christianity's contemporary encounter with other religions, and their associated cultural communities.

Alec is also involved with colleagues nationally in maintaining an ongoing agenda on behalf of ethnic minority Anglicans, through the body known as CMEAC (Council for Minority Ethnic Anglican Concerns). In the north west of England, he has been engaged in an initiative spearheaded by the Bishop of Burnley to monitor and address the social and political consequences of groupings such as the BNP (British National Party).
