Bishop of Bolton
The Rt Revd Dr Matthew Porter
The Rt Revd Dr Matthew Porter was consecrated as Bishop of Bolton in June 2023. He is passionate about people in the North of England following Jesus, and brings 29 years of ordained experience to this role.
Matthew was ordained in the Diocese of Sheffield in 1996 and served his curacy at Christ Church in Dore. He held the role of Vicar of St Michael le Belfrey in York, a resource church involved in church planting and revitalisation, with a broad range of ages including lots of students and young adults.
Matthew is an author, has completed doctoral studies in church planting, and in 2022 was appointed an Honorary Chaplain to the Queen, and then the King.

Matthew often describes himself as ‘a follower of Jesus and a leader in God’s church – in that order. He believes that nothing of lasting significance happens without prayer. He is passionate about evangelism, discipleship and developing leaders, serving people in poverty and young people.
Matthew is married to Sam who is a carer and values hospitality, and they have five grown-up sons. Like his three eldest sons who work in creative industries, Matthew appreciates artistry, architecture and good design. He also loves a flat white coffee and bacon sandwich (with ketchup, not brown sauce).
