Dying to Talk: A unique course to support those facing the death of a loved one

First published on: 17th April 2023

Often, we avoid talking about the emotional, spiritual, and practical aspects of the death of a loved one. Yet this makes it all the more difficult when faced with their passing. It can often be a lonely, confusing, and stressful time when coping not only with grief but the practical steps that need to be taken to arrange everything from funerals to finances.A course ‘Dying to Talk’, facilitated by Revd Anne Gilbert, the vicar of Rochdale Parish Churches and Funeral Champion for Rochdale Deanery, seeks to provide support at this time by offering participants the opportunity to speak openly about such matters.

Meeting in small groups with experts in their fields, ‘Dying to Talk’ is a unique course that offers a safe space to anyone who is facing the passing of a loved one. Over six weeks, participants will meet to discuss a range of topics that aim to equip them as they face this difficult time.

The course starts with a session led by Sister Louvain Birchenough, Springhill Hospice who will share what to expect during the final days and hours before passing. The aim being to prepare participants and reduce the fear and uncertainty at this time.

The following sessions cover the practical aspects of registering the death, working with the undertaker, managing the will and estate and financial considerations. These sessions offer the opportunity to discuss these topics with solicitors, registrars and funeral directors.

Finally, the course concludes with a session designed to support participants as they face living with grief and bereavement. A supportive and personal session, led by Revd Anne.

No course can avoid the devastation that losing a loved one brings, it simply aims to help offer a guide through this dark time. All faiths and none are welcomed, and participants can attend the full course, or drop in for specific sessions. To find out more information you can contact Revd Anne via email: revannegilbert@gmail.com or by phone 01706 346774

The group will meet at Burnside Centre Middleton M24 5NN, 6.30- 8.30PM on Thursday evenings from 11 May to 29 June.
