Manchester churches celebrate the King's coronation 👑

First published on: 9th May 2023

Communities and churches across the Diocese of Manchester celebrated King Charles III's coronation over a weekend of exciting events and gatherings. The weekend of celebrations brought people together for street parties, community events and a day dedicated to good causes, including The Coronation service, conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury, The Most Revd Justin Welby, in Westminster Abbey.

Ring for the King

Coinciding with the coronation service on Saturday 6 May, churches across our diocese and across the nation rang their church bells as part of the 'Ring for the King' celebration. In June 2022, bells were rung as we celebrated Queen Elizabeth's IIs Platinum Jubilee, as well as in September 2022, as a mark of respect for her passing.

The Coronation Big Lunch

Churches were encouraged to be part of the Coronation Big Lunch, an Eden Project initiative aimed at encouraging communities to come together and bring the coronation festivities to the heart of their community. Churches from across Manchester hosted gatherings inside and outside their church buildings on Sunday 7th.

The Big Help Out

The Big Help Out provided an opportunity to reflect on the legacy of His Majesty’s service and to showcase the impact of volunteering within communities. Families and participants of all ages gathered together to join in the work being undertaken across their local areas. Churches across Manchester are incredibly blessed to have faithful volunteers that support their parish every week. The Big Help Out was also an opportunity to shine a light on the incredible volunteering work that happens every week and to provide an opportunity for new people to enter into the volunteering life of the church.
