As the summer holidays commence, many parishes are already looking ahead and starting to let local families know that they will be holding a Back to School Sunday service before the new school year starts. This annual tradition is a prayerful opportunity to bless and support children, young people, school staff, and families in our communities.
Whether your church has long-standing relationships with local schools or is just beginning to explore those connections, Back to School Sunday offers a meaningful way to engage with your parish and affirm God’s presence in every school journey.
Back to School Sunday is a missional celebration that brings together worship, thanksgiving, and prayer at the start of the school year. It is a chance to:
- Encourage and bless children and young people as they return to school.
- Support teachers and school staff with prayer and appreciation.
- Reconnect with families in your parish, including baptism families and those who may have drifted from church life.
- Strengthen links with local primary and secondary schools.
- Celebrate God’s presence in everyday life and learning.
Themes for 2025
This year’s Back to School Sunday is rooted in the Lectionary readings Jeremiah 18:1–11 and Psalm 139:1–6, and explores three key themes:
- God knows everything about you - you are never alone at school.
- God is shaping us - every experience helps us grow.
- God has good plans for you – even the tough days are part of His purpose.
These themes can be woven into your sermon, children’s talk, and prayers, helping everyone reflect on God’s loving presence throughout the school year.
Blessing of School Bags
A much-loved part of Back to School Sunday services is the blessing of the backpacks. Children and young people are invited to bring their school bags to church, where they receive a blessing and a small token - such as a bag tag or prayer card - as a reminder that God is with them every day. This simple act is a powerful way to show that the church cares and is praying for them as they return to school.
