Chaplaincy is a ministry of presence, requiring a commitment to walk alongside people through both the high points and the more challenging moments of life. Revd Canon Daniel Burton, Vicar of Oldham and Chaplain of Oldham Athletic Football Club, is honouring this commitment this weekend by postponing his holiday to support Oldham Athletic at this Sunday’s National League play-off final at Wembley Stadium. Licensed by the Diocese as Chaplain to Oldham Athletic last November, Daniel provides pastoral and spiritual support to players, staff, and others connected to the club.
“Chaplaincy is about being present, especially when emotions are running high,” said Daniel. “This is the biggest game for the Latics in over 30 years, and many people in our community will be there for the match. I want to be there not just as a supporter, but as a pastoral presence for those who need it.”
Sport and faith often intersect in unexpected ways, and Daniel’s chaplaincy is a great reminder of how the Church’s presence engages with local communities.
