Farewell service for Archdeacon of Rochdale

First published on: 24th April 2024

A special service to mark the retirement of the Ven David Sharples, Archdeacon of Rochdale, was held in Manchester Cathedral this week. Hundreds of friends, colleagues, and clergy gathered for an opportunity to celebrate David's long and distinguished ministry and to bid him a fond farewell.

David was ordained in 1982 and has served in the Diocese of Manchester for over forty years, starting as a Curate at St Mary's Prestwich and then as the Incumbent of St Anne's Royton. During his career, David has also held the roles of Hospice Chaplain, Area Dean and Diocesan Director of Ordinands. Most recently, David has served as Residentiary Canon at Manchester Cathedral and Archdeacon of Rochdale.

During the farewell service, Bishop David presented Archdeacon David with two new titles: Canon Emeritus of Manchester Cathedral and Archdeacon Emeritus of the Diocese of Manchester. He said, "Carry these titles with you as a reminder that you remain very much part of this diocesan family."

Reflecting on Archdeacon David's career, Bishop David said, "You have helped so many people in so many ways on their journey with Jesus Christ, many of whom are gathered here today. So many people hold you in their hearts as you have held them in your heart. It has been a wonderful, personal privilege to have you as a colleague."

We wish David every blessing in his retirement with his wife Elaine and hope that he enjoy time with his young grandchildren. We thank him for his tireless service in our diocese and as Residentiary Canon at Manchester Cathedral.
