We share today the news that Revd Jonathan Bramwell, Head of Clergy Development, will be stepping down from his diocesan role this summer to return to local church ministry. Following a period of discernment, Jonathan has accepted the call to become Senior Minister at Hazel Grove Baptist Church, a vibrant church in South Stockport.
Jonathan has served in our diocese for a year and a half, during which time he has made a significant contribution to the formation and development of curates. His leadership, insight, and commitment to improving training provision have been greatly appreciated, and he has been a steady and encouraging presence throughout this formative stage of ministry for many.
He will be greatly missed by colleagues and curates alike, and will be a great asset to those with whom he serves at Hazel Grove Baptist Church. Reflecting on this next chapter, Jonathan said:
“Over recent months, I’ve experienced a growing sense that God’s primary call on my life is to serve the church locally as a full-time minister. I’ve really missed the regular preaching, journeying with a congregation through the ups and downs of life and being active in sharing the gospel rooted in a local community, far more than I ever anticipated I would. The sense of God calling me back into a local ministry context has been quite overwhelming at times. One thing I’ve learnt in my own ministry, is that sometimes God leads us in unexpected ways, listening to his call on our lives can lead to us making decisions that at times can feel disruptive, challenging but also exciting.”
Before his departure, Jonathan remains fully committed to delivering key elements of the training programme, attending ordinations, and ensuring that all necessary reports and processes are in place. He is also working closely with colleagues to prepare a comprehensive plan for the 2025/26 training year, ensuring continuity and support for all curates. Curates will continue to be supported by Revd Canon Rachel Watts, Director of Vocations, Revd Phil Cansdale, Director of Mission and Ministry, and their respective cohort bishops.
Reflecting on Jonathan’s time in the diocese, Revd Phil Cansdale shared:
“We are grateful for Jonathan’s leadership, wisdom, and the generous spirit with which he has served. He brought energy, clarity, and a deep pastoral heart to the role, and his presence will be sorely missed. We pray God’s richest blessing on him, Claire, and their family as they begin this new season of ministry.”
Jonathan’s final working day with the diocese is expected to be Friday 11th July 2025.
