Be aware of fraud

First published on: 13th September 2023

Earlier this month, a member of our clergy was approached by a couple in need of some money. They had called the church directly and were very convincing in their account of needing a bridging loan to cover overnight accommodation following a leak in their rented house. They appeared genuine and convincing and were insistent that they needed the cash immediately. Due to a sincere desire to help, the money was handed over but the couple did not return it as promised. The police have been informed.

Please be very cautious if you are approached in a similar manner and redirect people to organisations set up to help in such circumstances. Never agree to meet anyone alone at church and do not agree to give them cash for any reason.

The name given in this instance was Mark Rhodes who was accompanied by his wife Stephanie. It is unlikely that these are their real names but their description is as follows:

  • White male, approximate age late 30, early 40. Approximate height 5'7" with short brown hair, a Scottish accent and casual smart dress.
  • White female with shoulder-length blond hair.

If you have any concerns please report them to the police and the safeguarding team.
